Rome is the Eternal City. It is home to many of the most iconic examples of our civilization’s cultural, historical and architectural achievements. I have been lucky to live here for the last two and a half years, exploring museums, borghi (ancient mountainside villages) and the seashore beach towns. Yes, it is amazing. Yes, I miss my homeland, as well, particularly my children and grandchildren. But back to Rome . . .
For more than a millennia, the Roman Empire dominated a large swath of the earth. Roman rule dates as far back as circa 750 B.C.E. and ran up until somewhere in the latter half of the fifth century C.E. The era of Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius has had a major, permeating effect on society as we know it today. The Romans have had enduring and iconic impacts in art, architecture, engineering, history, religion and the shaping of language and culture in an expansive territory of colonization.
